AMES (KWWL) -

Joel Lanning is set to make his first start for Iowa State when the Texas Longhorns come to town on Saturday.

At his weekly press conference, Cyclone head coach Paul Rhoads announced that Lanning would replace Sam Richardson in that starting role. Lanning led all 4 Iowa State scoring drives at Baylor after replacing Richardson under center.

The redshirt sophomore had received more playing time recently and has completed 19 of 29 passes for 264 yards and 4 touchdowns this season. He's rushed 24 times for 69 yards and one score.

Lanning will be directed by interim offensive coordinator Todd Sturdy, who takes over the reigns for Mark Mangino, who cut ties with the Cyclone program on Monday morning. Rhoads says the quarterback change wasn't the reason for Mangino's departure.
