WATERLOO (KWWL) -

After serving our country in Vietnam, Wayne Nathem moved to Waterloo. He''s lived in the city ever since working different jobs, before owning his own trucking business.

He says he's owned Nathem Enterprises CBC Freight going on 20 years.

Nathem says the ups and downs of owning a business, will only be a benefit if elected mayor of the city of Waterloo.

"By smart spending and setting up smart budgets, things of that nature we were able to survive," said Nathem.

Nathem says if elected mayor, he'd take on the city's budget.

"We'll be working very heavily on that budget and so forth to bring that down from the $17.76.  I'm a goal setter, I will set a goal to bring that on down and I'd like to see in the neighborhood of $17.50," said Nathem.

He says Waterloo's taxes are too high and he wants to make it a priority to lower them. Nathem suggests to get the financial officer, department heads, and council involved.

"I will work to lower those taxes and make it something people will, instead of saying oh Waterloo has got the higher taxes Waterloo has got a lower tax now and that's a place that we'd like to have," said Nathem.
