Study: high school knee injuries more prevalent in female athletes

PHILADELPHIA (KWWL) -

According to a study conducted by researchers at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia, female high school athletes are more likely to suffer a knee injury than their male counterparts.

Researchers found that boys suffered more ACL tears, but that girls were saddled with more injuries as a whole -- according to amount of injuries per exposure.

The study also says that most of the injuries to the high schoolers examined came while participating in what it called "high-risk" impact sports, such as basketball, soccer and lacrosse.

Researchers also suggested that programs focused on injury reduction within these at-risk sports could decrease the amount of injuries sustained.
