(KWWL) -

Hurricane Patricia is picking up steam as it powers toward southwestern Mexico, with an initial landfall expected at some point today.

The storm has increased in strength to a Category 5 hurricane, with readings of maximum sustained winds near 200 miles per hour.

Landfall is expected to occur along the Pacific coast of Mexico near Punta San Telmo as an extremely detrimental storm on Friday afternoon or evening.

A hurricane warning is in place for much of Mexico's Pacific Coast, including the resort cities of Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo.

Patricia is expected to bring heavy rainfall and destructive surf along the coast, as well as life-threatening flash floods and possible mudslides throughout the weekend.

The Weather Channel says the storm became "the most powerful tropical cyclone ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere" after readings this morning.
