IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Ten Thousand Villages, the oldest and largest Fair Trade organization in the United States, opened a store in downtown Iowa City for the holiday season.

The store sells unique items made by people in over 30 developing countries.

The Iowa City Ten Thousand Villages location is a pop up store, meaning it will only be open from October to December.

The store provides an income to people in developing countries by paying them to craft items such as jewelry, scarves, home decor and instruments.

The pop up store isn't specifically a holiday store, but since it will be open during the Christmas season, there are some holiday items available, like tree ornaments and nativity scenes.

This is Ten Thousand Villages' second year in Iowa City, and hopefully their last - because the workers and volunteers want it to be permanent.

“I know that the people in Iowa City that have been involved with this effort since the beginning have put a lot of hours and a lot of heart into bringing a store to the area," manager Alicia Greenwood said. "so to see one open would be great, and to see it grow and flourish would be great.”

The store will be moving if it opens a permanent location, but hopes to stay in the downtown Iowa City area.
