Home heating help available for winter

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Winter is almost here and when it hits people tend to see a spike in their utility bills.

There's help available for people who can't pay their bills. However, heating assistance is limited. You can apply through your local community action program to receive help through LIHEAP, if you qualify. Most people can start applying November 1. Funds are available on a first come/first served basis.

Iowa also has a winter heating disconnection moratorium from November 1 - April 1. People who qualify for assistance through LIHEAP cannot have their utilities turned off during this time for failing to pay. However, the Iowa Utilities Board encourages everyone to continue making an effort to pay bills throughout this period to ensure they still have power come April.

For people who do not qualify for heating assistance, utility companies must give them 30 days notice before shutting off utilities during the moratorium.
