WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Quentin Hart says he wants to be the candidate to bridge the community.

Hart was born and raised in Waterloo, and he's doing the same with his family.

For the last 17 years he's worked at Hawkeye Community College, but it might be his charity that he's most proud of, "From the Heart."

"Which focuses on helping to improve housing for low income, elderly, and physically disabled residents. I think we've fixed up over three hundred houses in the last seven or eight years," said Hart.

Hart has also been on the city council for seven years, six of those years he's served at mayor pro tem. He says if elected, he'd be the first black mayor of Waterloo.

"Diversity is a strength and so my goal is to make sure those voices are heard. And make Waterloo that city that we can have the potential to be," said Hart.

Hart says he wants safer streets, and that includes building that trust between law enforcement and the community.

"But it's working as a community wide collective group of concerned citizens from business to faith to educators working together so that we can create opportunities to help people change the particular track that they are headed in that may be negative and give them those opportunities," said Hart.

Hart has outlined five platform issues he'd like to tackle if elected.
