Truckers teach area students drivers ed

EAST DUBUQUE, Ill. (KWWL) -

Students in drivers ed class at East Dubuque High School are learning about sharing the road with trucks.

"Truckers need...they're bigger so they need more stopping time," said 10th grader Samantha Splinter.

Reps from Hirschbach Motor Lines are onsite with a 53-foot semi to promote safe driving.

Trucking experts say there are safety  precautions new drivers should know when  it comes to driving around trucks.

"Mainly awareness and focus, not getting distracted...those are the big things," said AJ Tucker with Hirschbach Motor Lines.

A big distractor for teens is texting while driving.  A new survey released by State Farm Insurance says 44-percent of teens between 16 and 19 years old say they text and drive.

However, the students in this class have learned safety first.

"It's a very serious matter...I think when you get in the car your phone should either be off or completely out of your sight so you're not tempted to touch it if it does go off," said sophomore Ashley Lowe.

Other safety tips students learned are to give trucks extra space.

They also learned about blind spots -- if you can't see the mirrors of the truck, they can't see you.
