IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Crews are working to remove the fountain that's been in front of UIHC for almost 40 years.

It was originally built as a welcome feature for the main entrance of the hospital, but after the main entrance shifted to a different location and the fountain sprung leaks, the hospital decided to replace it.

"We just felt it was important to replace the fountain with something that would be very welcoming," UI healthcare spokesperson Tom Moore said. "[something] that would be very complimentary to what we have here in terms of the entrance already."

The fountain has not been functional for years and became expensive to operate due to the leaks over the years, so the hospital plans to transform the fountain entrance into a new welcome area similar to the hospital's healing garden.

"It'll have perennials, plants, rock outcropping and a water feature, as well as the pedestrian walkway," Moore said.

The new water feature will not be to the scale of the current fountain; the pedestrian walkway will provide safety to walkers, as its path will direct them away from traffic in the area.

The project is unrelated to the construction of the new children's hospital, and is scheduled for completion at the end of November.
