One year into a five year prison sentence, former Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius is released from prison into house arrest under court supervision.

The once para-lympic and Olympic track star was released on parole and into house arrest at his uncle's South African residence Monday evening.

Pistorius had been sentenced to five years for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, despite his defense that he mistook her for a burglar. He was found guilty in September, 2014 of culpable homicide, the equivalent of manslaughter, when he fired four shots through a locked toilet door on February 14, 2013.

The Department of Correctional services said parole conditions would include Pistorius undergoing Psychotherapy. He will also be subject to firearms restrictions.
