Northey comments on crop and weather report

Posted: Updated:
DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey discussed in the Iowa Crops and Weather report from the USDA National Agriculture Statistical Service.

Northey said thanks to the warm, dry weather atypical of this time of year, farmers are making excellent progress, with 83% of soybeans and 52% of corn having been harvested.

Corn harvest is now on pace with the five-year average following a lag in recent years.

"The dry, windy and warm weather have allowed crops to dry quickly," Northey said. "and farmers are encouraged to continue to exercise caution as the conditions exist for fires to start and potentially spread quickly."

The USDA National Agriculture Statistical Service releases weekly crop and weather reports from April through October.
