WATERLOO (AP) -

Waterloo officials are expected to vote soon on an agreement that would require the city to pay more than $270,000 to resolve alleged violations of the federal Clean Water Act.

The City Council is scheduled to meet Monday to vote on a consent decree with the Environmental Protection Agency and Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

The agreement is in connection to the city's sanitary sewer operations.

It avoids litigation regarding overloaded mains that release untreated sewage during heavy rains.

The deal would require the city to be under close regulatory oversight while it modernizes its operations.

The process will require a gradual increase in sewer user fees.
