Minnesota group rescues Golden Retrievers from Turkey

MINNEAPOLIS (NBC) -

A Midwestern rescue group is retrieving some four-legged friends from overseas that are in need of new homes.

The group, "Retrieve a Golden of Minnesota," out of Minneapolis, specializes in rescuing Golden Retrievers and has been doing so since 1985.

This week, the group brought home 15 homeless Golden Retrievers from Istanbul, Turkey.

Golden Retrievers face a unique affliction in Turkey -- as many roam the streets of the country after losing their standing as a status symbol pet there several years ago.

Volunteers say more than 500 golden retrievers are crammed into overcrowded shelters in Turkey, and many are unlikely to ever be adopted.

Stephanie Perri and the rest of the Minnesota group saw an opportunity, with Golden's being very popular here in the U.S., and decided to step in.

"This is a really wonderful opportunity that if there's purebred Golden Retrievers in another country that need help, and we have more than enough forever families here that want purebreds," said Perri, who works with Retrieve a Golden of Minnesota. "We thought it was a perfect opportunity to help. "

The group is hoping to raise more money so that they can bring more dogs over from Turkey to their shelter.
