GUANGZHOU, China (KWWL) -

Having a high stress job is bad for your health -- and it is now scientifically proven.

According to a study conducted at Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China, high stress at work could even lead to a stroke.

Researchers examined data from over 140,000 people in four different countries, including the United States, during the study.

What they found was that jobs considered to be "high stress" gave workers a 22% more likely chance of having a stroke when compared to less stressful jobs.

Occupations that caused the most stress were described as very demanding, but also offering little personal control. Examples provided by the researchers included nursing aides, restaurant workers and other service-oriented jobs.

Risk was also found to be higher in women.

The study was published in the the journal Neurology.
