Pennsylvania State Police say a gunman who provoked a shootout with police in a shopping center parking lot near Wilkes-Barre is undergoing surgery for two bullet wounds.

State police Capt. James Degnan said Saturday the man was randomly firing a semi-automatic rifle when local police arrived around 12:30 p.m.

When he shot at them, they returned fire.

He said multiple rounds were exchanged, but no one else was hurt.

A Wal-Mart superstore and other businesses in Wilkes-Barre Township Marketplace were locked down during the incident.

Degnan said the man was wounded in the abdomen and thigh.

Degnan said investigators are questioning a woman who was with the suspect, but they do not know what prompted the shooting.

The shooter has not yet been identified. Dengan said he wasn't carrying identification.
