OSAGE (AP) -

The public can now view the new $8.7 million Mitchell County Courthouse, including plenty of artifacts from the original 1858 courthouse.

The new courthouse held an open house Saturday, which included a short presentation on the county and courthouse's history.

The new structure's exterior pays homage to its long-standing predecessor, which was demolished in February 2014 despite efforts by local residents to save the landmark.

County officials had said the old courthouse was falling apart and that renovations would have been too costly.

Several artifacts join artwork that honors the county and old courthouse.

That includes the simple oak benches from the old courtroom, now housed in the courtroom lobby.
