West Des Moines adopts policy on room rentals

Posted: Updated:
WEST DES MOINES (AP) -

The emergence of the home sharing industry, thanks to businesses like Airbnb, has led West Des Moines officials to adopt a new policy limiting homeowners' ability to rent space in their homes for short periods.

The new policy requires homeowners who rent space in their homes for fewer than 31 days to be at home during the rental period.

Violators face a fine of $750.

West Des Moines City Attorney Dick Sciszinski says the new police "affords stability" by ensuring that someone who has some ties to the neighborhood is monitoring the renters.

Resident Alan Kessler, who regularly rents his Sherman Hill home using Airbnb, says he doesn't see the need for the city to intervene on the travel trend.
