Special investigation into former eastern Iowa police chief

DUNKERTON (KWWL) -

The results of a special investigation into Dunkerton's former police chief could answer questions people have had for more than a year.

This morning, the state auditor's office says Tim Schultz bought more than $2,500 in gas when he was not on duty as chief of police between January 2013 and August 2014. The report also says "it was not possible to determine if additional fuel purchases were improper because sufficient documentation was not available."

Schultz resigned last year after being accused of using a city credit card to buy gas for himself.

The report also includes recommendations to strengthen the city’s internal controls, like maintaining vehicle logs and ensuring police officers properly check in and out with the county.

Copies of the report have been filed with the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, the attorney's office and the DCI.
