Troops to remain in Afghanistan

(KWWL) -

Senior administration officials say President Obama will keep 5,500 U.S. troops in Afghanistan when he leaves the office in 2017.

The president promised to end the war on his watch, but this new information means he will be handing the conflict off to his successor.

His original plan was to have all but a small, embassy-based U.S. military presence pulled out by the end of next year.

However, military leaders have been saying the Afghans need more assistance and support from the U.S. They want to fight a resurgent Taliban and hold onto gains made these last 14 years.

The president is expected to announce the changes from the White House this morning.
