CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Iowa is behind when it comes to woman-run businesses in the state. That's according to a 2015 report commissioned by American Express.

The report says Iowa is the lowest in growth in the number of woman owned firms.

On Wednesday, Congressman Rod Blum held his first ever 'Women in Buiness' forum.

For Alexandra Eiby the idea of owning her own business is a dream come true.

"I wanted to be a business owner for a very long time but I've never been brave enough to actually do it as my full time job," said Eiby.

She's made it her full time job, owning Santa Cruz by Alexandra on Main Street Cedar Falls.

Eiby isn't alone, more than half the businesses in the Cedar Falls downtown district are either owned or co-owned by women.

"And gosh knows we need more women in business in the private sector," said Blum.

It's a passion that's brought dozens of women together on the campus of UNI Wednesday. Blum encouraged them to keep going.

For Eiby who takes her inventory on the road to Miami says she sees the challenges, especially when she started traveling.

"Just with all the people that I have met they are very successful in what they do. They are very, very strong women that empower women," said Eiby.

She says she's now working on empowering other women business owners.
