JOHNSON COUNTY (KWWL) -

Two new solar energy systems to produce clean energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels are now officially live at the Johnson County Secondary Roads and SEATS campus.

This is a project of firsts for Iowa.

“We're the first county to have used the power purchase agreement to set up solar on facilities," Johnson County Sustainability Specialist Becky Soglin said. "and we certainly do hope that other counties will follow suit.”

A Power Purchase Agreement, or PPA, allows solar system companies to claim tax credits then pass the savings on to a local government.

Johnson County tax payers are about to save a lot of money thanks to these new solar panels.

“The system will provide nearly $152,000 in savings over 25 years," Johnson County Board of Supervisors chair Pat Harney said. "It doesn't sound like a lot over 25 years, but in addition, it's a big step in energy savings and clean air throughout our county.”

Residents can expect to see more solar arrays in the area in coming years, as Johnson County Sustainability has other projects in development.
