IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

After threats via the social media app "Snapchat" were made against West High School, administrators are taking action to keep the building and the students inside out of harm's way.

They're doing that with Iowa City police officers patrolling the campus.

"Typically our response time is very, very short for Iowa City police anyway" West High School principal Gregg Shoultz said. "but since we don't have a school resource officer, we do rely on them to drop by when we need police presence."

One police officer will be on watch at the high school with others on call, should the situation call for it.

West High will also be implementing other brand new procedures to ensure the safety of all students.

"One thing we'll be working on going forward is a safety and security plan for our building," Shoultz said. "We will be looking toward upgrades in our building to provide added measure of safety and security."

Half of West High's student body stayed home from school after the initial threats, but attendance has gone back to normal following the new security implements.
