DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Loras College is holding events for Mental Illness Awareness Week.

The Counseling Center and student organization, Breaking the Silence, partnered up this week to end the stigma against mental illness.

“Everyone is impacted by mental health and mental illness in some way,” said Ellie Horst, president of Breaking the Silence. “Someone you know is fighting a battle you don’t even know they are fighting. Mental Illness Awareness Week is a chance to talk about those illnesses and coping methods for both those affected and their friends and families.”

Events during Loras College Mental Illness Awareness Week include the following:

Monday, October 12

Free mental health screenings will be offered in the Health Center lobby from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Drop by to receive a five minute questionnaire that assesses anxiety, depression and more.

Tuesday, October 13

Breaking the Silence will table at the Think Pink volleyball game on Tuesday, October 13 at 7 p.m. in the AWC. Bring a donation for Mary’s Inn for chance to win a $35 prize. Suggested items include toothpaste, toothbrushes, cleaning supplies, personal items, baby wipes, diapers and pacifiers.

Wednesday, October 14

Speaker Jon Jorgenson will present at 7 p.m. in the Marie Graber Ballroom in the Alumni Campus Center. This event is sponsored by the Student Union.

Thursday, October 15

Breaking the Silence will table and give out free compliments from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. outside the Café with apparel, giveaways, and mental illness awareness ribbons.
