WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Waterloo Firefighters are investigating an apartment located at 215 Baltimore Street.

The call came in after 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses say people were seen jumping from the second floor of the building.

Samantha Kirby and her 9-year-old son jumped to escape the fire. Her son is okay, but when Kirby jumped, she hit a satellite dish on the ground.

A friend drove her to the hospital, and she is recovering with minor injuries.

According to fire officials, the fire started in the garbage of a laundry room, and it didn't spread far, but there is smoke damage to the second floor.

Kirby believes it was started by a cigarette.

Two families are staying with friends due to damage and the Red Cross is helping another.

Kirby says she is so scared, that she is considering moving.

Michelle Corless and Lauren Moss contributed to this report.
