Local teacher deploying to Afghanistan

Posted: Updated:

Art teacher Shaela Bresnan prepares to leave for Afghanistan.

"I will be  joining the 649th and will be deploying to Afghanistan, so we'll start training up next week and be on the road from there," said Bresnan.

The 32-year-old Maquoketa High School teacher is also an officer in the Army Reserve.

"Being a member of the military and being a teacher work hand in hand.  I'm a member of the military because of the education I was afforded," she added.

Bresnan has been teaching and serving in the military for the same amount of time -- 10 years...and loves both.

"Everything we're attempting to  accomplish is  so that people have  that option of education...so really I would  not do  nothing else.  If I won the lottery I would still teach tomorrow."

Students at Maquoketa High School have recognized Bresnan's dedication to serving. She was recently honored at an all-school assembly.

"That by far blew me away, all the effort that the students put into it...and it really was a student driven event, I just felt so honored and appreciated. Felt like a very valued member of that community."

Bresnan isn't done packing yet or saying her goodbyes, but she's comforted by the support of her community.

She leaves some time next week for  Afghanistan and will be deployed for about a year.

While there, she'll be be part of the support group to take care of the soldiers -- making sure they have food and a bed.
