Apple: Pay Expansion and App Elimination

(KWWL) -

Tech giant Apple Inc. is making news with a bit addition and a bit of subtraction this week.

The company announced that it will remove several ad-blocking apps from its app store due to security concerns, while also saying it will expand its Apple Pay service.

In the case of the troublesome apps, Apple says is believes the issue centers around programs that install "root certificates" - which enable monitoring of network data and possibly compromise a user's personal information.

The company hasn't said how many of the apps it plans to remove, but is working with developers to replace the apps with versions that don't pose a risk to privacy and security.

Apple also announced that it is expanding its mobile payment service to a handful of major chains, building upon a service that has already become available in over a million storefronts internationally.

Best Buy, KFC, Chili's and Starbucks will all begin accepting the alternative payment method in some locations by next spring.

Best Buy has already started accepting Apple Pay immediately at all of its U.S. locations, while Starbucks is in the midst of a pilot program with Apple at some of its stores currently.

The payment method is similar to other digital wallet and mobile payment programs that companies such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express have debuted in recent years.
