One man is in the hospital following an apartment explosion.
It happened at the Shady Rest Apartments on Center Street in Cedar Falls around 1:30 p.m.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation, but firefighters tell me it may be related to a gas leak.
"Its just so scary being so close to that," said Angela Hovenga, a resident at the complex.

It was a quiet Saturday afternoon for residents, "and all of a sudden you hear this big bang and the whole apartment just shaking. It knocked me; rolled me right out of bed," recounted Hovenga.

Not knowing what had caused the loud bang, Angela rushed outside to find the wall of the apartment two doors down lying on top of a near by SVU.
Smoke coming from inside the building and debris scatter across the parking lot.

"See my neighbor crawling out of the rubble, asking, just begging for help. Just saying help me, help me. And he was conscious and he was able to get up and walk away, but his skin was just falling off, I mean he kind of looked like a zombie," said Hovenga.

The man lived alone with his dog, who escaped after the blast, but is now missing.
The explosion damaged 3 units here at the Shady Rest Apartments.

But residents from 8 apartments have been displaced until further notice.

"Yes, yeah, I'm still shaking. I am kind of paralyzed. What do we do now?" said Hovenga.

The gas and electricity was shut off to the entire building.
Residents who were allowed back now have electricity, but the gas remains shut off.

The identity and condition of the man injured has not been released.
We will update you as more information becomes available.
