Things return to normal in Oxford following gas leak

OXFORD (KWWL) -

People are back in their homes and the power is back on after a gas leak nearly shut down all of Oxford yesterday.

"It was somewhat scary at the time, but we were just basically concerned about everybody's safety," Said Mary Ann Carter, Owner of Carter Ford in Oxford.

Mary Ann was one of many business owners who had to evacuate for the gas leak, and she wasn't the only one scared at the time.

"I was just starting a hair color and I was hurrying to put that on and then they came in and said you need to get out now, so we did. I was nervous, I was a little scared, Sherrie Brenneman told us. Sherrie is the Owner of Prime Cut Hairstyling.

I'm told the town of around 800 has over 300 buildings, including homes, and gas and power were turned off in every one of them for hours.

Crews worked into the night to put in a new gas line, which is now complete.

MidAmerican Energy spent much of the day going door to door to relight pilot lights.

After a scary event, everything seems to be returning to normal in Oxford.

"It's a lot nicer now that nothing blew up and everything is good to go. You know for awhile it was pretty stressful, didn't know what was going to happen, kind of at the mercy of the gas and nature itself, now everything is back to normal," said Mark Struzynski, a Volunteer Firefighter in Oxford.

The community of Oxford is taking a deep breath now.

"Very thankful, got some appointments to make up here and get done with that but thankful for MidAmerican and all the towns people, all the fire departments and anyone that had anything to do with getting it back, getting us back up and running," said Brenneman.

We are told MidAmerican could be in Oxford for most of the weekend relighting pilot lights.

If any Oxford customers missed MidAmerican stopping by to light the pilot lights, they can call 888-427-5632 to schedule a new time.
