Wounded Trumpeter swan captured

Posted: Updated:

A Trumpeter swan shot and wounded in Scott County last weekend has been captured and is being sent to a rehabilitation center.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the swan, which was caught today, was injured by hunters in the Princeton Wildlife Area on Saturday. A second Trumpeter swan was killed.

Two men, 25-year-old Levi Young of Davenport and 25-year-old Kyle Munson of Eldridge, were arrested. They are both charged with one count of unlawful taking of a protected game species, one count of attempted taking of a protected game species and two counts of abandoning the swans after they were shot. If convicted, both men would have to pay $1,500 in restitution. The DNR seized three shotguns, shotgun shells, shell casings, a boat, motor and trailer from the men.

The bird is alive, but biologists say one wing is obviously injured. The bird is also dehydrated and appears to have been hiding in the mud.

The swan will be kept in Clinton overnight before being taken to a wildlife rehabilitator near Clear Lake.
