CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A Cedar Rapids man has pleaded guilty to injecting an unconscious woman with heroin, causing her to overdose.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa says 37-year-old Richard Roberts pleaded guilty on Wednesday in federal court to distribution of heroin.

In the plea agreement, Roberts admits to injecting an unconscious woman with heroin in August. The woman survived, but paramedics had to use Narcan, an opiate antidote, to revive her. Roberts admits the woman may have suffered brain injury or died if paramedics had not responded.

Roberts faces up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine. A sentencing date has not been set.
