Gas leak in Oxford forces evacuations

Posted: Updated:
OXFORD (KWWL) -

A gas leak forced evacuations in the community of Oxford this afternoon.

Alliant Energy spokesman Justin Foss says power has been shut off to limit ignition sources.

Foss says the leak was caused by an excavator that was digging in a construction area.

A dispatcher at the Johnson County sheriff's office says power will be out for the next couple hours.

They are advising people not go to back to their homes until the situation is clear.

KWWL's Kristin Rogers is on the scene and reports the center of town is blocked off as the "hot zone."

Authorities have let people who live outside of this area back into homes.
