WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Police are investigating after a dog was shot and killed Monday night in Waterloo.

The shooting happened just before 8:00 p.m. at 812 West Mullan Avenue near Wellington Street.

Police say a man got into a fight with the homeowner. The family then called police saying someone shot their dog.

The dog's owner spoke with KWWL and says his pet was a 9-year-old female pit bull.

He says it was very friendly to everyone in the neighborhood, and it was protecting him when he got into the altercation.

He told us the shooter is an acquaintance who was trying to rob him, and the dog jumped up when he was pushed by that person.  That's when the animal was shot.

Animal control was called in to assist.

No people were hurt in the shooting.

Police are continuing to investigate as officers have put out a warrant for the suspect's arrest.
