Suspect in fight that injured Iowa principal turns himself

Posted: Updated:

Authorities say a former Iowa State basketball standout has turned himself in to police after a high school principal and two others were injured in a Glenwood confrontation.
Mills County Attorney Tricia McSorley said 42-year-old Hurl Beechum, of Arizona, turned himself in Saturday and was released after posting bond. Beechum, 18-year-old Denver Cook and 21-year-old Colton McDaniel face several charges including intimidation with a dangerous weapon and assault causing bodily harm.
It was not immediately clear if the men have attorneys.
Authorities say Glenwood Community High School Principal Richard Hutchinson confronted a group of young adults about the use of a racial slur outside his home Sept. 27.  An affidavit says a fight broke out and Cook and McDaniel kicked and punched Hutchinson. Police say Beechum, Hutchinson's stepson became involved in the fight.
The affidavit says Beechum left and returned with a gun and shot McDaniel in the leg.
