DES MOINES (KWWL) -

More than 100 people watched the old Riverfront YMCA in Des Moines crumble to the ground.

The building imploded Sunday when workers set off about 100 pounds of dynamite that had been placed around the structure.

The eight-story building was built in 1957, but it had been vacant since January when the new Wellmark YMCA opened three blocks away.

Developers said the building's boxy design would have made it difficult to reuse for another purpose.

Sixty-one-year-old Dave Wolz says he was a little sad to watch the building crumble because he spent many hours at that YMCA in his youth.

As crowds dispersed from the scene, several people expressed their disappointment at missing the implosion when the blast was set off more than 10 minutes ahead of schedule.

Officials have not said why the decision was made to implode the building early.
