IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Having had four different careers in his life, including farming and truck driving, Larry Dingman never thought he would open the Veterans Liberty Center in Iowa City, where he is also the president.

A veteran himself, Dingman wants to lend a helping hand to as many vets as possible.

"Right now we think that we can service on a daily basis, help 25 to 30 veterans a day,” Dingman said. “At peak performance we're looking at maybe 750 veterans a month."

Still in its first week of operation, Dingman thinks with the help of volunteers, Veterans Liberty Center can be a place of relaxation and social gatherings for vets.

Dingman plans to have programs and activities up and running by next year.

"We have a wide range of things that we're going to implement,” he said. “and actually we've already partnered with an outfitter in Washington County."

The center has quickly drawn in some Iowa City veterans who are glad their town finally has a program that will provide the kind of help they need.

"I know there are other organizations, American Veterans, Eagles, places like that, that cater to veterans,” Iowa City Navy Veteran Del Brown said at the center. “But this is a nice place to do it."
