IOWA CITY (KWWL) -
A new study from the University of Iowa finds that workers who have "sit-stand desks" will burn more calories than their coworkers who sit all day.
Sit-stand desks give workers the choice between sitting, or adjusting their work-space so they can stand and work at a computer.
The researchers found that those employees with versatile desks burned up to 87 calories more per day, stood 60 minutes more desk each day, and walked six minutes more a day than sitters.
People who have the sit-stand desks don't return to old habits after the desks become commonplace; workers continue their good habits long after they lose their novelty, according to the research.
Dr. Lucas Carr, the corresponding author of a study on sit-stand desks and and assistant professor at UI, says "our findings are important because they support redesigning the traditionally sedentary office environment as a potentially cost-effective approach for fighting the obesity epidemic."
