U.S. adds 142,000 jobs, considered setback

A tepid jobs report from the government suggests that the U.S. economy, which has been outshining others around the world, is weakening.

The economy added just 142,000 jobs last month, depressed by job cuts by manufacturers and oil drillers. According to economists, anything near or above 200,000 jobs is considered healthy.

The Labor Department says U.S. employers cut back sharply on hiring in September and added fewer jobs in July and August than previously thought. Hiring in July and August was revised and lowered by 59,000. The unemployment rate remained 5.1 percent, but only because more Americans stopped looking for work. The proportion of Americans working or searching for jobs fell to a 38-year low.
