Chase leads to officer-involved shooting in Riverside

Posted: Updated:

A chase from North Liberty to Riverside ended with a Johnson County deputy's car being hit and a shot being fired by an Iowa State Patrol trooper.

The Iowa State Patrol says the Cedar Rapids Police Department alerted them at around 1:30 p.m. that a silver Dodge Charger suspected to be involved in several thefts in the Cedar Rapids area was headed south on Interstate 380.

A trooper spotted the car around the North Liberty exit and tried to pull it over, but the driver refused to stop, beginning a chase.

The Iowa State Patrol Air Wing and deputies from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office joined the chase as the car continued south on Highway 218 to the Kalona/Lone Tree exit.

The driver of the Charger exited there and pulled into the Kum and Go gas station.

The Iowa State Patrol says the suspects in the car would not listen to commands given by the trooper and the Charger ended up hitting a Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy's car. That is when the trooper fired a shot. No one was injured by the bullet.

Three people were arrested. Two were taken to the Washington County Jail and one was taken to the Linn County Jail.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating the shooting incident.

The Trooper remains on duty.

No names are being released at this time.
