DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

A Dubuque man and his daughter are being called heroes after saving the lives of their neighbor and her young baby this week.

It happened Monday evening in Dubuque.

Josh Hentges says he and his 11-year-old daughter Natalee were in the living room watching TV.  Natalee went to the door to pick up a balloon, and saw something strange in the window across the street.  She says at first she thought it was a Halloween decoration.

"But then I recognized it was moving, and I recognized it was not safe for them to be in there," she said.

So she alerted her parents, and after Josh saw the flames, he didn't hesitate.  He estimates he was across the street and in the bedroom of the house where the fire was in about 20 seconds.

Officials say a nearby candle had caught the curtains on fire.  The woman who lived there was asleep in that room with her young baby.

"I felt the door before I entered the room and it was hot, so I opened the door and let the smoke blow out a few seconds, and rushed in because I seen the baby by the bed. And like I said, I grabbed the baby, shook Megan about 5 times and woke her up," Josh said.

Natalee was waiting in the living room to help.

"I knew he would've needed help with the baby, because he would've had to wake up Megan," she said. "And when I heard that they were both in the room, I just wanted to make sure the baby and her were both safe, so I grabbed the baby and ran to our house."

The two were certainly in the right place at the right time.  But it so easily could've gone a different direction.  Josh was supposed to be fishing that night, and Natalee should've been in the shower, but her sister beat her to it.

"They're here for a reason, that's all I know. There's a reason they're alive, man, and there's a reason I went in the house that night. I don't know why," Josh said.

No injuries were reported and the minor damage was contained to the window area.
