WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A shakeup in a Waterloo city department, the head of sewage services has been let go unexpectedly after 26 years of service.

"One of the things that he said that struck me really funny was I'm being fired and he makes the statement you don't like me. I think I answered you're absolutely correct. That's one of the few statements he's made since I've known him that was true," said Larry Smith, former Waterloo Waste Management Superintendent.

Smith says the mayor gave multiple excuses and said he was terminating him. He says he was allowed to resign or get fired, Smith chose to be fired.

"If I resigned I felt I was admitting guilt and I am not guilty. I have done what I have been allowed to do. If I mismanaged it's because I was simply managing by how I was told to manage," said Smith.

"I can't talk about that situation. I will say that Larry Smith is a super guy. I like Larry a lot, but the situation that we are in now is a personnel issue and I cannot talk about it," said Mayor Buck Clark.

Smith wouldn't elaborate on those reasons Mayor Clark gave before he said he was terminated, but he says what Clark said can be proven false.

"You know the only thing that I've ever wanted is to retire when I want to retire. I don't want somebody being vindictive and firing me I'll say it basically because he don't like me. We haven't liked each other since he was a councilman," said Smith.

Smith says this isn't over and he will be hiring a lawyer later this week.
