Two pedestrians hit near UIHC

Posted: Updated:

Shattered glass and markings are now the only signs of a car accident just feet away from the intersection of Melrose Ave. and Hawkins Dr. in Iowa City.

Some people who walk in this area near the hospital and football stadium are surprised the incident even happened.

"I've been here for like, five years,” student Mohammad Amarneh said. “and this is the first time i hear there's an accident here."

While some people do not feel endangered walking in this area, others hope changes will be made to ensure the safety of pedestrians.

"Hopefully these intersections can be looked at,” University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics employee Maheen Rajput said. “Maybe not only around the hospital, but other heavily trafficked areas to try to improve safety for both cars and pedestrians."

Several other pedestrians agree, as severe crashes in close proximity are unsettling.

"I think it's very scary.” said Maheen. “I mean, a lot of us cross multiple times during the day coming and going to work, and even during the day if we have to leave for a short period of time."
