Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery on Capitol Hill lobbying lawmakers

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -

"We want more young people to have birthdays."

That's what Iowa Men's Basketball Coach Fran McCaffery said during KWWL's Today in Iowa broadcast this morning.

He's in Washington, D.C. to lobby Congress to make the fight against cancer a national priority. Today, hundreds of patients, survivors and volunteers will ask lawmakers to restore full federal funding for cancer research and prevention programs. The disease kills 1,600 people in the United States each day.

"The advancement of modern medicine has been phenomenal and we were on the positive end of that," said McCaffery whose son, Patrick, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last year. "Patrick's doing very well. Right now, he's pretty much back to normal so we're blessed," said McCaffery.
