Iowan returns from Pope trip

Posted: Updated:

Max Ortner is still glowing.

"I can't believe this happened to me," he said.

Ortner volunteers at his church and was chosen by Congressman Rod Blum to see the Pope.

He traveled with Blum to Washington D.C.

"You know what he told me? He said I was the best dressed man there," he said.

And wearing that great suit, he saw Pope Francis address Congress.

Max is a little hard of hearing so it was difficult to hear at times, but he didn't let that ruin his trip.

"I am going to receive a DVD from Rod Blum of his talk," he said.

He now unpacks his suitcase at age 81, one year older than when he left.

"I can't believe it happened to me. I don't deserve this, there are so many other great people on earth other than me," he said.

It's a birthday he will always remember, as the time he was chosen to see Pope Francis, on his historic trip to the United States.

"I didn't deserve such a beautiful gift. It was one that I will never forget and I'll talk about it for years and years," he said.
