Over 500 pounds of prescription drugs is collected in Dubuque this past weekend.

Sgt. Gary Pape of the Dubuque County Sheriff's Office says it was an effort to prevent drug abuse and a clean way to dispose of medications.  

The collection was by the Dubuque Drug Task Force, Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency and other community organizations.

Items collected included prescription medication, non-prescription medication, vitamins, herbals, supplements, syringes, thermometers and aerosols.

In total, 540 pounds of prescription and non-prescription medication was collected during during Friday and Saturday. Another 40 pounds of sharps were collected.

The items collected will be incinerated at a later date.  

It's part of a nationwide effort sponsored by the DEA to collect old and unused prescription medications.
