For Dubuque couple, Papal gathering is family affair

PHILADELPHIA (KWWL) -

Philadelphia city officials estimated anywhere between one and two million people would be in the city Sunday to try to catch a glimpse of the Pope.

For Dick and Joyce Smith from Dubuque, that meant a lot of opportunities to mingle--something they love to do.

"My first goal when I got here was to see the Pope, I needed to see the Pope, and I said after that it was to mingle and mix with all kinds of people, and they both have been wonderful experiences. And I will continue mingling everywhere I go," Joyce said.

So they spent a good part of the day Sunday walking around, mixing it up with people from around the world.  In fact, one of the highlights of their trip was a conversation they had with a family from El Salvador as they were in line for a port-a-potty.

"We talked about how there was really no difference between them and us, and the Pope, I think the Pope really believes that its us and us rather than you and us," Dick said.

They say this gathering has helped re-energize their faith.

"You really can't explain it, you just feel so much more alive," Joyce said.

So much more alive, in large part, to a Pope the world over adores.

"We were trying to decide what other person could do this, bring more than a million people to a very crowded place where you stand in line all day?"

You'd be hard pressed to find anyone else who could make that kind of impact.
