DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

A three-bedroom house in Dubuque is scorched by flames.

Key West and several other departments are doing a practice burn."

It was started intentionally -- for training purposes.

Nearly 30 firefighters from seven local fire departments including East Dubuque, Key West and Epworth took part in the practice burn.

"We of course then utilized this building for the last two and half months to conduct training exercises on where we can be destructive and not care about securing property which is not very common for us."

The owners of the house were actually the ones to contact the fire department requesting to have their house burned down.

There weren't many salvageable materials so we couldn't donate things and that sort of thing, so we thought this was a great option to donate it to the local fire department so that they could have the experience of a real fire situation," said Stephanie Klein.

The Klein family says they also went with this option of having their house burned because it saves money, as compared to having it torn down.

Fire officials say this is something available by different fire departments for a small fee, which gives them much-needed training.

It took about an hour for the house to burn. The owners say they plan using the area for a garden while their new house is currently being built nearby.
