Cubs Clinch Playoff Berth After San Francisco Giants Lose to Oakland A's

Posted: Updated:

The Chicago Cubs lost on Friday to the Pittsburgh Pirates, but they were still able to clinch their first playoff berth in seven years as the Oakland A's knocked off the San Francisco Giants.

The Cubs have not reached the postseason since the 2008 season, when they won the NL Central and racked up 97 victories.

The Cubs had an opportunity to take care of business themselves on Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field, but a strong pitching performance by Gerrit Cole and a trio of strikeouts by Pirates closer Mark Melancon in the bottom of the ninth inning sent Chicago to a 3-2 defeat and forced them to rely on an A's victory over the Giants to get them into the postseason.
