UNI Senior defensive lineman Isaac Ales has been named a semifinalist for the 2015 William V. Campbell Trophy, which recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.

Ales is one of 135 student-athletes that the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame has chosen as semifinalists for this prestigious award. The senior from Muscatine, Iowa is also one of only 23 athletes representing FCS football.

Ales has played in 36 games for the Panthers on the defensive line, starting in 18, including the last 16 games he has appeared in. He is the seventh Panther to be named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, joining James Lindgren (2006), Chad Rinehart (2007), Josh Mahoney (2009), Ben Boothby (2011), Kyle Bernard (2012) and David Johnson (2014).

The 6-3, 268 pound lineman has been busy on and off the field as a current nominee for the AFCA Good Works Team. He was also named to the MVFC Scholar-Athlete Team and was awarded the Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award in 2014. He is an avid volunteer in the community, working with programs like the Special Olympics, the UNI Dance Marathon, Salvation Army and the Just Read Program for the Cedar Valley.

Ales is now fifth all-time at UNI in career tackles for loss (30.5) and yards from tackles for loss (128). He earned MVFC All-Conference second team last season after ranking No. 5 in the MVFC in sacks and No. 3 in tackles for loss. He had at least one TFL in every game during the 2014 season. Through the first three games of 2015, Ales has 11 tackles, including 4.5 for a loss of 18 yards and two key sacks.
