Faculty group censures incoming Iowa president over ethics

Posted: Updated:

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Faculty leaders in the University of Iowa's largest college have voted to censure the incoming school president over inaccuracies on his resume.

The Faculty Assembly of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences on Wednesday chastised former IBM executive Bruce Harreld for a "failure of professional ethics."

The motion notes Harreld listed his job on his resume as the managing principal of a business strategy consulting firm that is defunct. Harreld also failed to identify co-authors on several papers, which violates the university's operations manual.

The censure marks the first time a university group has criticized Harreld directly rather than the Iowa Board of Regents for its process in hiring him.

Faculty, staff and students have blasted regents for hiring Harreld despite a lack of experience in higher education administration.
