West Michigan tops Kernels for Midwest League title

Posted: Updated:

The Cedar Rapids Kernels came up just a bit shy. The Kernels fell 3-2 to West Michigan in the decisive game 5 of the Midwest League championship.

Cedar Rapids opened the scoring in the third inning when Austin Diemer blasted a 3 runs home run on to the left field porch. The homer was Diemer's first of the postseason.

The Kernels extended that lead in the fourth as Edgar Corcino tripled down the right field line. T.J. White drove in Corcino with a base hit to left center for a 2-0 lead.

West Michigan, however responded with 3 runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead.

Cedar Rapids put the tying run on first base in the 9th, but Diemer struck out, ending the game and stranding the runner.

The Kernels finished with 83 total wins, finishing as the Western Division Champion for the first time since 1994.
